Peppo Catches A Deer-Folktales From Kerala

Once upon a time there lived a hunter named Peppo. His uncle was also a hunter. His name was Samba. One day Peppo said to his uncle," let us dig a hole to trap a deer. If we get a large one, we can have good meal for a couple of days."But Samba refused it. He said," Dig it yourself. I would prefer making a trap to catch a bird."
Peppo agreed. He said," all right. But if I get a deer you shall have your share."
Samba agreed. He said,"O.K,but if I catch a bird you will not even get a small piece."
And they made two traps to catch bird and deer.

The next day Samba woke up early and looked into his trap. There were no birds. Then he looked into Peppo's trap. There was a big deer .Samba thought for a while and he got an idea and quickly transferred the deer from Peppo's trap into his own empty one. Then he hurried to wake up Peppo.Peppo rubbed his sleeping eyes. Samba shouted a great delight,"look, what a surprise. My trap has a deer."Peppo observed the two traps and was silent. He did not turn up for breakfast. Samba finished his meal and went to search for his nephew. He found him at the edge of the river, gazing at the water.
"Peppo, what are you doing here?"asked Samba.
"The water of the river is flowing up stream, is n't it?"Peppo asked Samba.Samba replied," It is not possible. The water of the river always runs down stream."
"Why not uncle? If a deer can get caught by a bird trap?" said Peppo.
Samba was ashamed. He agreed everything. As a punishment, Peppo did not give his uncle even a little bit of the cooked deer meat.
