In Pandiya Nadu,there was a town known as
Thirupoovanam.There was a Shiva temple and Shiva was known as Thirupoovana
Naathar.An woman by the name
of Pon Anaiyal was full of devotion for Lord Shiva.She was a very
spiritual person .Pon Anaiyal was a good singer and dancer.Daily she wakes
up early, go to the temple to pray and dance.She longed to build a deity
for Lord Shiva out of gold.But lack of money have delayed her
wish.Whatever she earns goes to feeding Lord Shivas devotees. However
this didnt deter her from her aim .
Shiva was aware of her desire.He decided
to grace her.One day , he appeared in front of her in a form of a sither.On
seeing him , she receive him with full respect.She washed his feet and begged him to have a meal . Pon
Aniyal was looking worried and this made the sither ask her what was
the problem. She then told him her desire.
The sither then told Pon Anaiyal to
bring all the metals that she has.He then sprinkle viboothi all over
it and instructed Pon Anaiyal to burn it off that night. Then the
sither left. Pon Anaiyal did as told.
The next morning the whole heap of metal
had turned into gold.Pon Anaiyal knew then that its the Lord himself
who had come in the form of a sither.She then build a statue of
Shiva out of gold.
